The most important thing to consider when you buy a coffee machine is the type of coffee you want to use. Coffee machines can be anything from a simple filter machine through to the more complex machines and can cost from under one hundred pounds to over several hundred.
Different types of machine make different type of coffee, espresso, cappuccino and filter, and it is therefore important to ensure that you choose the correct one for your needs. It is then necessary to consider the features of your chosen machine rather than the make of it.
Probably the most important features will be how many cups of coffee you need your machine to make and the size of it so you can ensure it can be stored. This is particularly important if you wish to leave it out on display and only have a small amount of worktop space available.
How Does it Work?
One of the most popular ways of making fresh coffee is to use a cafetiere. Making coffee in this way allows the flavour of the ground coffee bean to be extracted. The cafetiere has a circular wired mesh plunger which fits inside the glass coffee pot.
The ground coffee is placed into the base of the pot and hot water added to create an infusion before more hot water is added to fill the pot. The plunger and lid is then placed on top and pushed down to make sure the ground coffee stays in the bottom. The coffee should then be left for up to five minutes for infusion to finish.
Vacuum method machines are probably the best way of making coffee while ensuring that there is no effect on the taste due to the use of paper filters. It also makes sure that the temperature of the water used is correct.
The machine has two glass bowls and boiling water is placed in the bottom of the two. It is moved to the top glass bowl under pressure and it is here that the infusion of the coffee happens. As the heat in the bottom bowl reduces, the infused coffee is passed back through a filter and returned back to the bottom bowl.
Are There Any Other Features That Should be Considered?
There are then a number of other basic and necessary features that you will need to take into account. These include the type of filter it has, either permanent or disposable, an automatic safety switch off, an indication of the amount of water in the machine and a control for the strength of coffee you want.
Having a power indicator to show if the machine is on or off can also be important together with a milk frother if you want to be able to use your machine to make cappuccinos. Although these features sound simple they can be of great importance once you start using your machine.
